Our house is full of apples

Apples, apples, and more apples abound in the Dean family abode here on Trinity's campus. We took a day trip to the fine, historic (self-proclaimed) town of Cedarburg, Wisconsin (also a "Wonder of Wisconsin" in 2008) to meet up with our crazy fun friend Megan (pictured in the tree!) and steal the fruit that some trees so laboriously grew over the season. Ha!

Though I always make fun of Aaron's rural-ness and make up silly things that he supposedly used to do when he grew up in western Pennsylvania (e.g. pick-up truck drag racing, play the banjo for his hogs), it was his first time to ever go to an orchard and pick apples. He had a great time, especially when he got to carry around our 20-pound bag of "sweet-pickin's" (his words).

At the end of the day, I celebrated my love for the internet sensation (and perhaps maybe even my best friend) Keyboard Cat by devoting five hours of my evening to carve my newly-bought "punkin" (again, Aaron's word).

So, what to do with all the apples? So far I've thought of: make three pies (all for me to eat), dip in cheese fondue and caramel (as of yesterday, done and done), add to oatmeal, um... wash and eat as normal, make applesauce, target practice a la William Tell (borrowing the intense compound bow that Aaron uses for hunting*, naturally), prepare as a dinner side, and bake into tasty cakes/muffins. Any other suggestions welcome.

  3. lol...I love your posts and Alan LOVES the pumpkin you carved! We got one to carve this year too, although I don't think it'll be as elaborate as yours with a three month old around!

  4. wow the pumpkin or should i say punkin is amazing, don't think i am skilled enough to do that! but now I am motivated to try. I was going to forgo pumpkin carving this year because last year my super overpriced imported pumpkin rotted only days after carving :-( But now I am thinking I might need to carve after all! As for the apples, I used THIS recipe for freezer apple pie filling which was awesome. I made 10 bags with about 20 lbs of apples and still have 3 left for future pies. Also they test amazing with this recipe and then unfrozen to use on top of waffles! :-)

I think I doubled or so the recipe!

  5. I do recognize the Aaron putting almost the whole apple in his mouth at once(sorry Aaron, lol), but I don't believe I've met the one who owns the intense compound bow for hunting :-). Sounds like lots of really yummy apple treats. Another super easy quick one is apple crisp. I can email you my recipe if you want (Aaron likes it because the topping is sans oatmeal).

  8. Whoa, thanks for all the comments!

@Nicole--thanks!! And I saw your and Alan's pumpkin on Facebook, and I think it is super awesome. AND TROGDOR COMES IN THE NIIIIGHT!

@Bethany--I'm sorry to hear about your pumpkin's demise!! Mine rotted only soon after too, but it was still so much fun to carve. Maybe we can have a carve-a-thon together next fall since you'll be in the states (right?) and pumpkins won't be as pricy! And thank you for the recipe!!!

@Mom & Dad Dean--yes yes, please e-mail that recipe to me. You should've seen the look on Aaron's face when I told him that you were going to probably send me that recipe soon... he practically drooled on the floor!

@Rachels-- a. nice word! I'm sad you couldn't be with us. b. your carving from last year was my inspiration for this year to carve something fun and cool. So thank you for that!! Yes, my dad is very proud, actually. hahaha. c. Done. Megan pelted one at him in the orchard when he told her that Wisconsin's dairy industry was overrated.
